European Parliament resolution on Escalating repression of the Baha'is in Iran

(2025/2987(RSP))

The European Parliament,

having regard to Rule 150(5) of its Rules of Procedure,

Whereas according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms set forth in that Declaration without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status;

Whereas Iran is a large and diverse country, with many ethnic and religious minorities; whereas the Iranian constitution mentions the Zoroastrian, Jewish, and Christian communities, but not the Baha’is, as recognized religious minorities;

Whereas several countries in the Middle East, including so-called longstanding and strategic partners of the European Union, either ban or do not recognize Bahá’í faith, and subsequently deny rights to this community;

Whereas charges against Baha’is in Iran are frequently based on accusations of political nature, including espionage or activities allegedly aimed at destabilising or overthrowing the Iranian government;

Whereas this Parliament has, on several occasions, highlighted the situation of women and minorities in Iran, yet has failed to show the same level of attention to the situation of minorities in neighbouring countries;

Whereas European sanctions against Iran have severely hurt the fundamental human rights, notably the right to health and food security, of all Iranians;

Whereas Israel hosts the spiritual and administrative centre of the Baha’i community;
